Two of our long-time staff, Sierra Bachler and Becca Welna, have recently moved to different roles at Sojourner Project! Here's what they had to say when reflecting upon the switch...
Sierra Bachler
Years at Sojourner: 4
Former Role: Shelter Advocate
New Role: Lead Shelter Advocate
What are you most excited about in this new position?
I'm excited to work closely with Sojourner's admin, legal advocacy program, and education/outreach program. In addition, I'm eager to continue learning and gain knowledge to become a well-rounded advocate.
Is there any advice you would give to the person stepping into your former role?
Be prepared to learn as you go and don't hesitate to ask questions. It takes time to fully understand the role so be patient with yourself. We never really know how each day will go in an emergency shelter; be comfortable adapting and being flexible.
What do you love most about working for Sojourner Project?
I love being surrounded by such knowledgeable and inspiring women at Sojourner. The staff here have years of experience. I can go to anyone for support, questions, and brainstorming.
I really love staying in contact with past shelter residents. Providing continued resources and support goes a long way to ensure survivors have stability and the ability to thrive independently. It's great hearing how women do outside of the shelter. It reminds us of our work's impact on women and children.
Becca Welna
Years at Sojourner: 7
Former Role: Community Outreach and Education Manager
New Role: Development Director
What are you most excited about in this new position?
Continuing to share and uplift Sojourner’s vision of relationships, homes, and communities free from violence and fear. I have seen so many people’s lives transform because of Sojourner's support and I love helping donors understand the impact of their contributions. I look forward to deepening existing partnerships and fostering new investments in our work. I enjoy partnering with our Executive Director to achieve the goals set in our 5-year strategic plan and helping shape the organization's sustainability. I’m still passionate about prevention education and hope to explore funding to expand our outreach programming further as well!
Is there any advice you would give to the person stepping into your former role?
Embrace all the variety that this position includes. The role involves facilitating youth prevention education, community awareness-raising presentations, and professional training, along with volunteer/intern management, digital and print communications, supervising staff, administrative support, and more. You’ll never be bored!
What do you love most about working for Sojourner Project?
I appreciate the commitment, creativity, and grit of my fellow staff. I love working in an environment that is so clearly mission-driven but manages to maintain an organizational culture of respect and care.
Sojourner is lucky to have passionate and committed staff like Sierra and Becca. Thank you and good luck!
